Encoder - An easy solution to detect position and speed
An encoder is a sensor that converts physical motion into an electrical signal. Encoders employ different kinds of technologies to determine position, count, speed, or direction. Some of these technologies are magnetic, resistive, mechanical, and optical. The most popular one is optical technology.
An encoder can detect either angle or linear displacement:
- The encoder that detects angular displacement is named rotary encoder,
- The ones that detect linear displacement are called linear encoder.
There is another important aspect of encoders. These sensors can produce either absolute or incremental Encoder (relative) signals. Incremental signals do not indicate a certain position; they only tell that the position has changed. On the other hand, absolute signals indicate both the position change and the absolute position of the encoder.
