Absolute Encoder - A solution to determine rotating shaft position

An absolute encoder determines the exact position of the shaft it is measuring. It outputs unique words or bits for every position.

As you switch an absolute encoder on, it can condition the exact position of the rotating shaft. To do so, the encoder uses a magnetic, capacitive, or optical sensor. The sensor reads the unique code off of a rotating disc.

There are two discs with concentric rings in each absolute encoder. One disc is stuck to the shaft in the middle, and the other can move around freely. As the disc turns, the absolute encoder markers move along the track on the fixed disc. For instance, for absolute optical encoders, the marker is a hole that lets light pass through. The more unique these markers are, the more precise the encoder would be.

Importantly, an absolute encoder can remember this position even if the power goes out for a short time.

The absolute encoders can also be categorized based on their output relation to shaft turns: single-turn or multi-turn. A single turn absolute encoder can detect the exact position within a full turn. A multi-turn absolute encoder detects position through multiple shaft rotations.
Some applications in which absolute encoders can be used are:

  • Valve Positioning
  • Telescope Position
  • Crane Position
  • Linear Actuator
  • Machine Tool
  • Hoist & Winch
  • Motor Position
