Hysteresis
Hysteresis is a term commonly used in inductive and photoelectric sensors.
Hysteresis (differential travel) in photoelectric sensors causes a specific switching behavior in the devices (see Fig. 1). The switch-on point is always referred to as the sensing range.
Only the diffuse sensor type and its corresponding fiber version benefit from distance hysteresis.

Hysteresis (differential travel) in inductive sensors causes a specific switching behavior in the devices (see Fig. 2). The switch-on point is always referred to as the operating distance. Hysteresis is absent in devices with analog output and Namur devices, which exhibit continuous transmission behavior.
