SIL certification

SIL is an acronym for “Safety Integrity Level” that is one of the most important safety guidelines available in Europe today. It is derived from DIN EN 61508 and defines the conditions under which systems must still perform their function. Electrical or electronic systems (components) that are used to perform safety-related functions must meet increased requirements. They are classified according to a SIL 1-4. As defined in the IEC standards, there are four SIL Levels (1-4). A higher SIL Level means a greater process hazard and a higher level of protection required from the SIS. SIL Level is a function of hazard frequency and hazard severity. Hazards that can occur more frequently or that have more severe consequences will have higher SIL Levels.
