Position Detection of Forklift Forks When Opening Container Lid by Rugged Inductive Sensors
Bulk-cargo containers' unloading system has a forklift. The forklift has two pairs of lifting forks: The upper forks and the lower ones. The upper ones open the container's lid. Then, the lower ones rotate around a horizontal axis. So, the container leans and tips the contents out.
We need a sensor system to confirm that the lid is in a vertical position before rotation starts. An extended sensing distance is critical to clear the probability of mechanical harm.
A solution for the challenge:
Inductive sensors are suitable for this application.
Features of the solution:
• Having a one-piece stainless-steel frame and vacuum-encapsulated electronics
(These two make Inductive sensors appropriate for the mechanical environment.)
• An optimal sensing distance
• corrosion- and water-resistant stainless-steel housing and sensing face
• IP68/IP69K rated
Set-up and function of the sensor:
A metal bracket is boarded externally on the actuating mechanism for the upper forks. So, the flush sensor is boarded very close to one of the forks. The sensor detects the actuating arm's position as it drives the fork into the vertical status.
The Extreme sensor is configured with an industry-standard PNP normally-open interface. A flexible PUR-sheathed cable attaches the extreme sensor to the lower-fork tilt-control systems. The cable entry is sealed.
