Special Piezoresistive Pressure Sensors for Measuring Wave Impact Pressure of Seasides
Climate change of the planet is leading to severe storms in the coastal areas of the world, which sometimes lead to floods and tsunamis. As a result, pressure sensors are installed in high-risk coastal areas. Some of the dykes on which the sensors are installed are located offshore and therefore not connected to an electricity network. Therefore, an autonomous system must be installed on site that can be used as a power supply. Such a system must be flexible and robust, and measure field data reliably. These systems basically consist of three parts: sensor data recording, power supply and data transmission.
A high-performance battery and an additional charge controller for solar systems accelerate wireless communication through a virtual private network (VPN) and a 3G router.
Piezoresistive pressure sensors with a normal frequency above one kHz are designed for this purpose; Two sensors are installed, one at the top and the other at the bottom of the sea wall. According to this system, acceleration, speed, wavelength, height and water pressure are measured. In addition, sea level monitoring and wave measurements are performed, and wind speed information is provided from meteorological stations.
All this data is analyzed. Analyzes have shown that the upper sensor responds to the impact of the wave in less than 4% of cases, and only storms and floods affect both pressure sensors.
In addition, some experiments have shown that a short negative pressure often occurs in the signals before the impact of the wave. This falls below the atmospheric value of 1 bar. The detection of this delay in impact between the two KELLER sensors allows the classification of impact profiles (wave-impact profiles) later.
The ultimate goal is to predict their potential effects based on maximum pressures. This system is also equipped with special cameras.
